Sand syndicate opposes MV check gate at Lailapur

By

SILCHAR, Oct 18 A vicious sand syndicate is allegedly hell-bent to shift the MV check gate from Lailapur to Dholai.

According to sources, people along the Assam-Mizoram border here demanded Transport Minister Chandan Brahma in July this year to set up an MV check gate at Lailapur. The local MLA Girindra Mallick also had gave his consent for setting up a check gate and accordingly based on the report of the district administration, the department decided to set up the MV check gate at Lailapur.

But the governments decision to set up the MV check gate has caused butterflies in the stomach of the sand lifters operating in the area. Besides the sand lifters, beetle-nut and the ginger syndicate are also opposing the check gate at Lailapur and is demanding that the gate be shifted to Dholai saying that that if the check gate is installed at Lailapur, government will have to bear massive revenue loss.

Meanwhile, this sudden opposition by the syndicate has raised questions from among the locals of the area. Reports reveal that the government had to incur huge loss of revenue every year from the Rukmini Sand Mahal. Further, more than 20 brick firms skip the government tax and sell bricks to Mizoram, it is alleged.
