GUWAHATI, Nov 3 - All Assam Students� Union chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya will bid adieu to the student body during its four-day Duliajan convention, scheduled to be held from November 18. After the last meeting of the present executive committee held today at the AASU headquarters in Gauhati University, Bhattacharya said he was resolute about his official exit from the organisation.
�Till my last breath, my services will be for the All Assam Students� Union. However, the decision to take retirement from the AASU during the 17th convention in Duliajan is final,� Bhattacharya told The Assam Tribune. �I wanted to quit AASU during its Moran convention and also during the Dudhnoi convention in 2015. However, due to intense pressure from my fellow student activists, I had to continue,� he added. Speculations were rife about Bhattacharya�s exit from AASU after the student body�s decision to form a new political party billed Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).
Whereas his �health� was cited as the primary reason for Bhattacharya�s conspicuous absence from a number of AASU programmes of late, a former executive member of the student body had even alleged that the senior leader was being cornered in the organisation for opposing AASU�s political move.
During his stint in the student body spanning over three decades, Bhattacharya was the assistant general secretary of the All Guwahati Students� Union (AGSU) in 1982 and became its acting general secretary in 1983. He was the general secretary of AASU for three terms from 1989 to 1999 and later became advisor and chief advisor of the organisation.
The 17th general conference of the AASU central committee will be held from November 18 to 21 at Duliajan. During the executive committee meeting held today, an elaborate plan to conduct the convention smoothly, including movement of delegates and other logistic arrangements, was discussed.
