Samples sent for tests after pig deaths in Meghalaya

By STAFF correspondent

SHILLONG, May 9 - The Meghalaya Animal and Veterinary Department has sent 79 samples of pigs collected from across the State for tests in a laboratory here after three pigs died in as many districts.

According to officials, the pig deaths were reported from East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts. The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has sent samples (including swab, serum, blood and tissue) for tests following this development.

The State Government has already banned the import of pigs after Assam and Arunachal Pradesh reported pig deaths due to African swine fever. It has also banned inter-State import and export of pigs.

Meanwhile, the State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has started conducting periodic inspection of pig sheds, pork stalls and private farms across the State.
