BARPETA, Sept 15 - The Sakha Satra Samaj of Barpeta Satra has welcomed the government decision to provide financial assistance to naamghars in the State.

In a release issued by Mahananda Pathak, general secretary of the Samaj, it was stated that there are 215 naamghars scattered across the State and established as per traditions followed by the historic Barpeta Satra established by great Vaishnavite saint Mahapurush Madhabdeva.

Sakha Satra Samaj of Barpeta Satra was established in 2010 with a view to coordinate all the activities among them, besides ensuring all-round development of the satras which are politically neglected and have been facing severe economic problems and therefore threatened with cultural extinction.

The release stated that the organisation hailed the recent announcement of the Finance Minister of the state to grant an amount of Rs 2.50 lakh each to as many as 8,000 naamghars of the State.

The president of the organisation and the Burha Satriya of Barpeta Satra, Bashistha Dev Sarma termed the decision of the State government led by Sarbananda Sonowal as a responsible act and expressed his gratitude to the government.

The release also stated that the 215 naamghars affiliated to Barpeta Satra Sakha Satra Samaj are scattered around 15 districts of the State. Among these districts, Barpeta has 30, Kamrup (Metro) 7, Kamrup 60, Baksa 30, Nalbari 29, Chirang 1, Bongaigaon 1, Kokrajhar 2, Udalguri 15, Darrang 1, Lakhimpur 7, Jorhat 21, Golaghat 3 and Karimganj 1 respectively.

The president of the Samaj appealed to the Chief Minister and Finance Minister to include all the 215 satras which are in fact naamghars by nature, but termed as satra due to its allegiance to Barpeta Satra and hoped that the deplorable condition of the institutions will be revived with the financial assistance.

The secretary also informed that the district committees have been asked to submit lists before the respective deputy commissioners for this purpose.
