Saikia hails NRC with note of caution

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 30 - Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Debabrata Saikia has welcomed the publication of the final draft of the NRC as a welcome development.

In a statement here today, Saikia, however, maintained that the NRC should not fail to include any name of the genuine Indian citizens, and, at the same time, it should not include any name of foreigners.

The final draft published today is not the final list of the eligible people, it is only the final draft towards preparing the NRC. Those Indian citizens whose names have been excluded from the final draft will get opportunities to make appeals for inclusion of their names in the NRC.

Saikia said the Congress would try to ensure that those who possess proof in support of their claims for inclusion of their names in the NRC could get them incorporated in it.

He said he was convinced that some Indian citizens have failed to get their names incorporated in the final draft of the NRC and they would be able to get their names included in this document. The government would have to take steps against those who fail to prove their Indian citizenship. The Congress party would lend support to the government to this end, Saikia said.
