By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 9 - Welcoming the Central Governments decision to go for cleaning of the Ganga, leader of the Congress Legislature Party and Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia today said that the Brahmaputra should also get equal focus.

I welcome the decision of the Government of India to clean River Maa Ganga under Namami Ganga initiative. The earmarked Rs 20,000 crore for this project might change the status quo of this holy river...

I feel that the mighty river Brahmaputra, which signifies Assam, should also get equal focus, Saikia said in a statement.

He added that the Brahmaputra and the Barak create havoc through flood and erosion every year.

Every year thousands of hectares of land get inundated by these rivers, lives are lost, properties get destroyed and as a result, many families become homeless, landless and are pushed into poverty, he said.
