Sahityarathi�s birth anniversary celebrated

GUWAHATI, Oct 14 - The 156th birth anniversary of Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaroa was celebrated on Wednesday across Assam, as well as in Odisha and West Bengal in a befitting manner. The central function in the State was held under the aegis of the Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaroa Smriti Raksha Samiti in association with Ahatguri Satadal Sakha Sahitya Sabha at Ahatguri, the birthplace of the Sahityarathi in Nagaon district.

The programme began with garlanding of Bezbaroa�s statue by Samiti president Pradyut Kumar Choudhury and lighting of 156 earthen lamps by general secretary Rantu Deka. Plantation of a bakul sapling was another highlight of the occasion. In Guwahati, the celebrations were marked by lighting of 156 earthen lamps at Bezbaroa Chowk. Students of Dispur College also took part in the event which was observed in accordance with all COVID-19 protocol. Addressing the gathering, State Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya referred to Bezbaroa�s association with West Bengal and Odisha and said that he created a unique triangle of the three States and that his enduring legacy had been a binding force in forging goodwill and brotherhood among the people in all the three States.

The Smriti Raksha Samiti, while renewing its demands for a direct train link between Guwahati and Sambalpur, urged the Minister to expedite matters. �We had submitted memorandums to the Union Railway Minister and the Prime Minister for effecting direct train link between Guwahati and Sambalpur. We hope that it will materialise soon, as we were given assurances in this regard,� Deka said.

At Sambalpur where Bezbaroa stayed for two decades and produced the bulk of his monumental literary creations, the day was observed at Bezbaroa�s renovated residence and office named Sadhana Griha.

Dipak Kumar Panda, one of the chief a dvisers to the Samiti and who was instrumental in reviving the Bezbaroa legacy there, social activist Pinki Pradhan and the public of Sambalpur took part in the celebrations, which were marked by lighting of 156 earthen lamps. Panda spoke on Bezbaroa�s steadfast love for his motherland Assam as well as his deep attachment with the people of Sambalpur. �Bezbaroa is held in high esteem by the Sambalpur residents and today they paid their homage to this great son of India,� he said.

In Kolkata, 156 earthen lamps were lit in front of the statue of the Sahityarathi at Assam Bhawan, where people from different walks of life including members of ASL Club paid homage to the colossus of Assamese literature.
