GUWAHATI, Nov 10 - Praising the infrastructure in Bangladesh, Asam Sahitya Sabha president Paramanda Rajbongshi on Sunday lamented that Guwahati lacked halls and auditoriums for staging plays, and said had it not been for the naamghars, the state�s drama tradition would not have continued.
Rajbongshi was speaking at an open meeting of the biennial conference of the Kamrup District Natya Sanmilan of Asom Natya Sanmilan organised at the Dispur Press Club.
Rajbongshi, who released a souvenir of the conference, also dwelt on the influence of drama on society.
�Over the last several centuries, uncountable number of plays were written in the state, but unfortunately we are not aware of many. We don�t have information about all of them and they are not discussed,� he said, adding that the state could not take the drama tradition to its worthy heights.
Recalling his visit to Bangladesh where he saw several well-equipped halls and auditoriums where plays are rehearsed and staged regularly, he said, �We don�t even have a proper hall here. Given the state�s tradition, we should have had a number of good auditoriums for staging plays. In fact, the Banga Bhavan at Silchar is much better than any hall in the city.�
