By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 19 Asam Sahitya Sabha president Dr Dhrubajyoti Borah today met State Assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi, during which heurged the Speaker to pass a resolution on the floor of the House on the question of constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards for the Assamese people which would be the starting point for the whole process of implementation of such safeguards.

The Sabha president assured support to anyeffort taken in the national interest.

Several intellectuals, besides a delegation of Sadou Asom Goria-Moria Deshi Jatiya Parishad, also called on the Speaker and called for adequate safeguards for the indigenous populace of the State for preserving their social and political identity in the face of large-scale infiltration from Bangladesh.

Stating that people belonging to diverse tribes and communities, who have been living in Assam before the British colonial days, i.e., prior to the Yandaboo Treaty of 1826, are the indigenous Assamese people, the Parishad said some of these groups are yet to be officially scheduled on the basis of their ethnicity, and that the government must identify those sons of the soil.
