Sahay warns against aid to militants

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 30 - Director General of Assam Police Mukesh Sahay today warned that anybody found aiding militant groups in converting old currencies into new ones would be booked under relevant terror funding laws.

Sahay, addressing media persons here this evening, said that the State Police is keeping a close eye on such activities.

Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Kula Saikia, who was also present during the media briefing, revealed that there are reports about militant outfits getting their ill-gotten money converted through schoolchildren and educational institutions.

They are also using schoolchildren and middlemen, including contractors, to get their money converted. There are also attempts to get the money deposited in some fictitious accounts, which we are monitoring, added Saikia.

Saikia stated that the Assam Police on Tuesday held a meeting with officials of 13 banks and a representative of the Reserve Bank of India to discuss the issue and take preventive measures.

He conceded that the demonetisation policy has affected the insurgent groups which are now making desperate attempts to convert their holdings. He added that a sum of nearly Rs 2 crore has already been seized by the police during several drives.

On the ongoing operation against the ULFA, the top police brass, including the Assam Police chief, stated that the counter-insurgency operation is on.

Our operation is against anti-national forces. The interest of the people residing in the affected areas is our priority as well, the DGP said.

The DGP also divulged that recruitment of new cadres into the ULFA has been reported along the Assam-Nagaland and Assam-Arunachal border areas.
