SAG torch journey to start today

GUWAHATI, Jan 16 - The Torch Relay Ceremony of the 12th South Asian Games will start tomorrow at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, stated a release.

The ceremony will be started by lighting of the torch by Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports who is also the chairman of the organising committee. The Minister will then hand over the torch to the IOA president and then he will hand over the torch to the eminent sports persons participating in the relay.

The torch relay will then start from Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and will finish at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. The torch will be received by Rajiv Mehta, secretary general, IOA at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Besides the Minister, the torch relay ceremony will also likely to be attended by secretary (Sports); president, IOA; secretary general, IOA; and Avinash Joshi, Jt. CEO, OC-SAG. Many eminent sports personalities, including Gopichand, Jaffar Iqbal, and Sushil Kumar, are also expected to participate in the event.

The launch of the torch relay will add to the already existing vibe around the Games, which is the first international mega sporting event in the North Eastern region. The torch will travel to all the State capitals of the North East India and will ensure people�s participation in the Games scheduled from February 5 to 16.
