Safai workers call off strike

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Oct 9 - The safai workers of the Municipality withdrew their strike, which they had resorted to today after the authorities had failed to provide them with a copy of the minutes of a recent tripartite meeting, in which Dibrugarh Municipal Board and Executive Officer had agreed to disburse at least six month pending salaries to the workers.

The tripartite meeting was held on October 5 between Harijan Mazdoor Union, Dibrugarh Municipal Board & Executive Officer on behalf of district administration regarding various demands of safai workers.

The authorities had agreed to pay six months of salary instead of the last 16 months of salary. But for reasons best known to the Municipality, the workers were denied the copy of the minutes of the meeting till October 8, as a result of which the workers resorted to non-cooperation today.

However, after getting the signed minutes copy at 1 pm today, the Union withdrew the strike temporarily in the greater interest of the public in view of the puja festival, Union president Ranjan Choudhury told The Assam Tribune.
