Sabhas appeal to political parties

By Correspondent

JORHAT, Dec 3 - Addressing a press conference here, Asom Sahitya Sabha general secretary Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi appealed all political parties to make their stand clear on their policy towards protection and promotion of Assamese language.

According to him, the use of English language is threatening the existence of the Assamese language as institutions of higher education in the State have adopted English as a medium of instruction instead of making the vernacular medium compulsory in the colleges.

Though the State Government had taken a decision to make the use of Assamese language mandatory, the Government itself, he alleged, is refraining from taking action against those officers who refuse to read or write Assamese in their official activities. The Sahitya Sabha general secretary appealed the Government to take initiatives for the mandatory use of the Assamese language in all government offices of the State.

Publicity convenor of Asom Sahitya Sabha Debajit Bora, Samiran Bordoloi and many other office-bearers also attended the press conference today.
