Sabha will try to reach out to Assamese people worldwide: Saikia

By Sanjoy Ray

GUWAHATI, Jan 3 - Newly-elected president of Asam Sahitya Sabha Kuladhar Saikia today said that the apex literary body of the State would try to be active in making positive use of social media so that the Assamese speaking people across the globe get connected and their suggestion for the greater interest of the State can be gathered.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, Saikia said that the Sabha, which is a more than a century-old organisation, needs to adapt to the changing scenario of the literary world.

In todays world, young generation identify themselves more with Internet literature and online journals. It is time that they should be widely recognised as valuable contributors in our literature. The digital world has to be exploited for the benefit and development of the Assamese language and promote a new school of though and creativity, Saikia reckoned.

New challenges have come and these can be faced by an inclusive way through creation of bridges between the multitudes of ethnic groups in the State so that the Sabha becomes a broad-based platform, the Sahitya Akademi Award winner said.

The former Assam Police chief added that the Sabha would make efforts to reach out to the young generation of writers and literary enthusiasts who need to be given avenues to contribute for making our language and culture rich.

Saikia, who will take over as the new president of the Sabha in the next biennial session of the Asam Sahitya Sabha to be held in Sualkuchi, favoured the need for a well-documented history of language so that the present generation gets to know the glory of the Assamese language.

The self-pride of speaking in our language and writing should be given a conducive atmosphere by the Sabha through its umbrella activities, Saikia said, adding that all the branches of the Sabha should be in mission mode to take forward the different activities of the literary.

Meanwhile, extending its good wishes to the newly elected president and other office-bearers of the Sabha, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad has urged the apex literary body to steer clear of the political influence to keep intact its prestigious position in the Assamese society.

The youth body, which has been vocal against the Sabha for not taking a lead in the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act movement in the State, added that the activities of Sabha would be closely monitored by the people of Assam.
