Russian film fest begins in Manipur

IMPHAL, May 17 � Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh inaugurated a five-day Russian film festival at Manipur Film Development Corporation multi-facility auditorium at Palace Gate here on Saturday.

Consul General of Russian Federation in Kolkata Mrs Irina K Baskirova, Vice Consul and Director, Russian Centre for Science and Culture, Kolkata, Yuri Dubovoy, Consultant to Government of Manipur RK Nimai Singh and Secretary, Arts & Culture, Government of Manipur K Radhakumar Singh were special guests, while former State Minister of Arts & Culture and Chairman, Festival Organising Committee Dr Moirangthem Nara presided over the inaugural function.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh said that the present generation should strengthen peace, friendship and co-operation between the two countries. The Film Festival and a Russian Education fair in Imphal have been organised as part of observance of the 70th anniversary of Victory over Fascism.

The visit of President Pranab Mukherjee to Russia to attend the anniversary last week and his having signed nine agreements in several fields including higher studies will strengthen Indo-Russian co-operation, he said.
