JORHAT, May 11 - The Institution for Culture And Rural Development (I-CARD), the NGO based on Baghchung outskirts here has launched a project for total rural women�s literacy in four villages of Sivasagar district.
An I-CARD press note stated that the project will cover women of Soraipora, Garbhanga, Ligiribari and Majorbari villages of Sivasagar district.
The project is intended to give honour, respect and independence to the women, who will be taught how to sign their names and to read a simple letter, the note stated.
The note further said that the women have been chosen for this project, because when women learn, the family learns. Literacy is expected to further emancipate the women in their banking transactions and financial dealings, the note pointed out.
The note said that on May 4 the project was started by holding two separate meetings at Soraipora LP School and the other at Majorbari LP School respectively.
The meetings were attended by Father KA Thomas, Director, I-CARD, Puspalata Mili, Media Manager and office coordinator.
The note stated that the first meeting was presided over by Monuprasad Mili, teacher of Soraipora LP School and also Secretary of the Agency for Rural Development Action (ARDA), while the second was held under the presidentship of Rupeswar Panging, village headman of Majorbari. In the meeting, the process of imparting literacy to rural women was described by the I-CARD office-bearers.
It may be mentioned here that the I-CARD has appointed one teacher for two villages each, and they would be taking classes for one hour, three times a week, for the next one year, the note added.
Ranjita Mili and Harakanta Yein were appointed teachers for the villages by the NGO. Blackboards and chalks required for the purpose too will be supplied by I-CARD.
At the end of the year, the literate women leaders will be taken on a tour to Kokrajhar to interact with Bodo women.
