Rural Devp Minister takes stock of Majuli flood scene

JORHAT, July 24 - State Panchayat and Rural Development (P and RD) Minister Naba Kumar Doley on Thursday visited Majuli to take stock of the flood situation there.

A Majuli district administration official informed that Doley was briefed by the Majuli Deputy Commissioner about the flood scene of the island, rescue and relief measures undertaken by the district administration and about the condition of the embankments.

Doley thereafter visited a relief camp set up at the Korotipar High School and interacted with the inmates and took note of the facilities arranged there. He later inspected the embankment at Tuni area and then visited Majgaon and Sonarigaon embankments where many families affected by floods were taking shelter.

The Minister directed the officials of the P & RD department to construct highlands along the embankments in order to let people residing outside the embankment and near it to take shelter during the rainy season when floods occur, the official said. He also asked the officials to install proper toilet facilities for the flood-hit people taking shelter on the embankments.

The Minister then inspected the embankment at Meragarh area of Bonga�n. Doley was further briefed by the Majuli Deputy Commissioner and officials and engineers of the Water Resources department on the condition of the embankments and protection measures undertaken in this regard at the Government guest house at Garmur.

The Minister then moved to Dhakuakhana in Lakhimpur district.
