GUWAHATI, Nov 3 - Assam�s seventh airport Rupsi is ready to commence operations under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS). The commercial operation is likely to start from January next year.
The airport has been redeveloped at an estimated cost of Rs 69 crore and has also received its licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The airport is one of India�s newest in the RCS route to provide local population direct connectivity to cities like Guwahati and Kolkata.
Spread across 337 acres of land, the newly developed airport has a terminal building with an area of 3,500 square metres. Equipped with 10 check-in counters, the terminal is designed to handle 200 passengers during peak hours. The newly built runway of the airport is suitable for landing ATR-72 type aircraft.
The airport has car parking having a capacity of accommodating 100 vehicles. The airport is also provisioned with sustainability features like rainwater harvesting system, solid waste management system and horticulture works.
The Rupsi airport is covered by fenced forest with rich fauna and flora.
The project work, which included construction of terminal building, ATC tower, security hut and other allied works and development of air side facilities like strengthening and recarpeting of the runway, taxiway, apron and other works such as car parking, approach road, boundary wall, etc., has been completed.
The airport will cater to the needs of air travellers from four districts of lower Assam � Dhubri, Kokarajhar, Bongaigaon and Goalpara as well as neighbouring states of West Bengal, Meghalaya and some parts of Bhutan.
The Rupsi airport is located in Kokrajhar district. Kokrajhar town is 65 km from the airport. The nearest town is Dhubri which is at a distance of 20 km.
