GUWAHATI, Oct 9 � Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala�s much loved play, Rupalim will be staged on October 14 on the open air stage at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra here. The play will start at 5.30 pm.
Asom Natya Sanmilan, Tihu unit, which is going to present the play, said that the movement to perform plays outside the conventional stage is gaining popularity in the State. Hirakjyoti Das of Asom Natya Sanmilan, Tihu unit, expressed the hope that the theatre lovers would enjoy Rupalim under the open skies.
�Taking theatre out of the conventional stage is a challenge for us. We have already done several shows under the open skies and the response of the theatre lovers has been very encouraging for us,� said Das, adding that it would be a unique experience for the theatre lovers of Guwahati to view a play like Rupalim, famed for its intrinsic natural appeal despite certain complex situations skillfully handled by Rupkonwar.
The plot that revolves around the tragic story of romantic love depicted in the backdrop of tribal culture is much loved by the readers. The poignancy of the dialogues and the delineation of characters has made this play stay in the hearts of the people. The conceptualisation and presentation of the characters of Mayab, Rupalim, Manimugdha, Itiven and the rest speaks amply of the skills of the playwright in conjuring the right ambience, ultimately leading to the control of sensual love by intellectual realisation.
Das further said that the Sanmilan has not introduced any experimentation in the play that is a faithful presentation of Rupkonwar�s Rupalim. Directed by Jitendra Deka, the play is of two hours and 20 minutes; duration.
�We have so far staged three plays under the open skies. We are doing this on an experimental basis. It is not only the audience who enjoy the play on the open stage, but for everyone involved with the play, it becomes a memorable experience,� said Das.
