GUWAHATI, Dec 7 - RTI activist Dulal Bora was today arrested by Hatigaon police for allegedly demanding money from a motor vehicle inspector (MVI) against whom the former had sought information under the RTI Act.
Bora had allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh from MVI (Kamrup) Naimuddin Ahmed after which Ahmed lodged a complaint with the Hatigaon Police Station.
Bora was picked up from his house around 6 am in connection with the case (905/19) registered under Section 385/389/384/511 of the Indian Penal Code.
However, Bora claimed that he has been framed in the case. He had reportedly informed a senior transport official about the anomalies done by Ahmed. Later in the evening, Bora was produced before the court.
The arrest comes a few days after the Court of Civil Judge, Kamrup (Metro) had issued a summons to Bora in connection with a defamation suit filed against him by Dr Kashyap Prakash, OSD to the Chief Minister, while passing an order of ad-interim injunction restraining Bora from circulating or releasing any statement in any form in respect of the subject matter of the defamation suit till January 21, 2020.
