Rs 9,72,343 to 31 ailing journalists under welfare scheme

GUWAHATI, March 13 - The State government today handed over financial assistance to 31 ailing journalists under the Journalists� Welfare Medical Fund at a function held at the Janata Bhawan.

Speaking on the occasion, Hrishikesh Goswami, Media Advisor to the Chief Minister, said that the Journalists� Welfare Medical Fund is an effort on the part of the Chief Minister to expedite the government�s initiatives towards the welfare of the journalists of Assam.

He also said that while people in government jobs enjoy financial security, journalists involved in gathering and disseminating information are devoid of financial security.

He said that in the coming days the State government, in consultation with different journalist associations, would formulate more welfare schemes for the benefit of journalists.

Under the programme 31 ailing journalists from across the State were given a sum totalling of Rs 9,72,343.

A corpus fund to the tune of Rs 3 crore has been created for the purpose. A sum of Rs 70 lakh has already been disbursed among 150 journalists under the scheme.
