BADARPUR, May 31 � The State Government has sanctioned an assistance of Rs 5 crore for improving the condition of the people affected by the recent cyclonic storm in Karimganj. This was disclosed by Minister Gautam Roy during his recent visit to the district.
Roy, in a press release, stated that no list of the cyclone-hit people of Cachar and Hailakandi districts has been prepared till date and as soon as such a list is made the necessary assistance will be provided to the affected people of these two districts as well. The cyclone, it may be mentioned, had ravaged the three districts of Karimganj, Cachar and Hailakandi.
Amar Unise observed: The people the four major towns of the Barak Valley � Silchar, Badarpur, Karimganj and Hailakandi � along with the rest of the Valley observed �Amar Unise�� the Bangla Bhasha Swahid Divas � on May 19 last.
It may be recalled that on May 19, 1961 eleven brave persons had sacrificed their precious lives at Silchar Tarapur Railway Station in police firing. In their hallowed memory, the people of Barak Valley are observing the golden jubilee of the divas with a year-long programme.
In conformity with this martyrs� day, several functions were held at Badarpur, Silchar, Karimganj, Hailakandi and other parts of Barak Valley, where thousands of people, braving inclement weather, paid their tributes at the martyrs� columns. The day was also marked by cultural functions and blood donation camps organised in different parts.
In this connection, works in State Government offices of the valley were also suspended after 1 pm as a mark of respect. The Deputy Commissioners of Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts along with the officers and staff of their establishments also offered floral tributes.
On the occasion, a beautiful newly constructed �Sahid Minar� was inaugurated on the Assam University premises by the Vice Chancellor Dr Tapadhir Bhattacharyya.
Besides this, a website www.unisemay.org was also inaugurated on the occasion by writer and poet Smt Anurupa Biswas.
Inaugurated: A newly constructed building of Badarpur Circle Office was inaugurated recently by Minister Gautam Roy. Those who attended the meeting included Karimganj MP Lalit Mohan Suklabaidya, DC, M Angamutu, Badarpur Circle Officer NK Debnath, Badarpur Town Committee � chairperson Babli Das, ADC Arunabha Dey, PWD, Executive Engineer, MR Laskar, DSP-Foyjul Rahman, journalist Prititosh Banik and others. Karimganj DC Dr Angamutu in his address appealed to Minister Roy to grant some money for purchasing some furniture for the Badarpur Circle Office. Roy immediately handed him over a sum of Rs 50,000 for this purpose.
In another function, Roy laid a foundation stone of Badarpur Treasury Office at Badarpur Ghat Industrial State Complex, which will be completed within six months. Rs 18 lakh have been sanctioned for the purpose.
Resentment: Various sections of people of Karimganj district and several Bengali cultural organisations expressed serious concern over the absence of the Bengali language in the Government website. Karimganj MLA Mission Ranjan Das has promised to raise the issue in the State Assembly.
