AIZAWL, Dec 2 - Assam Rifles seized demonetised currency notes amounting to Rs 34.5 lakh from a vehicle at Sairang, 20 kms west of Aizawl on Tuesday evening.
The Assam Rifles intercepted the Aizawl-bound SUV coming from Guwahati and found bundles of the demonetised notes. They arrested two persons, Sawmthanga, 48, Stephan Kama, 21, both residents of Bawngkawn, Aizawl.
The seized notes and the duo have been handed over to police. Police said Rs 30 lakh were in demonetised 500 rupees notes and the rest was old 1000 notes. The cash were transported from Badarpur in Assam and it is suspected they were planning to deposit the amount in Mizoram, where the tribals are exempted from income tax.
