�Rs 3 cr allocated for biotech research�

GUWAHATI, Oct 6 - The Guwahati Biotech Park (GBP) organised a seminar on October 4 titled �North East Biostart - Life Sciences Start-up Drive�, in association with North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat, under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), New Delhi, a press release stated today.

The programme was inaugurated by Vinod Seshan, CEO of GBP and secretary, Science and Technology, Assam government. Seshan spoke on the Assam Biotech Policy 2018-2022, and said that a fund of Rs 3 crore has been allocated for the 2017-18 financial year for biotech education, research and innovation, start-ups etc.

Dr KM Bujarbaruah, Vice Chancellor of Assam Agriculture University; Dr Pinaki Sengupta, Director of CSIR- NEIST; Dr Pawan Sharma, former senior consultant- healthcare at NER-BPMC and Dr BG Unni, director research, Assam Down Town University, spoke during the inaugural session.

Dr Bula Choudhury, senior scientist at GBP, said the North East Biostart has been planned for creation of bio-entrepreneurial ecosystem in the North East.

In the technical session, Dr Pawan Sarma spoke on biotechnology-driven developments in the North East, while Dr Mantu Bhuyan, senior scientist at CSIR-NEIST, spoke on entrepreneurship development through MSME scale technology developed in CSIR-NEIST. Amitabh Misra, senior manager biotechnology at NRDC, spoke about the easy-to-commercialise bio-herbal technologies for start-ups as well as patent filling support available at NRDC, while Dr Madan Gopal Barthakur, senior scientist at GBP, delivered a lecture on how GBP was catalysing biotech entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurs, scientists and students from Jorhat�s academic institutions, start-ups from Dibrugarh University, Arunachal Pradesh State Council for Science and Technology participated in the event.
