Rs 1.55-cr NEC grant for tourism prog

NEW DELHI, May 19 � The North Eastern Council (NEC) has sanctioned Rs 1.55 crore, as grant-in-aid for two six-month full time certificate programme in Tourism and Hospitality Management for the people of the North Eastern region. A sum of Rs 64 lakh has been released.

Official sources said the two six monthly courses would be conducted by IIM Shillong (Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Management). The first programme would start from June and the second in December. The project is being financed by NEC.

The programme is specifically designed for the North Eastern States and tour operators, travel agents. The residential course would involve field training and placement would be ensured based on participant�s performance.

Sources said that IIM Shillong has been advised to conduct interviews in State capitals by giving sufficient time and each batch of selected candidates should be drawn from each of the eight North Eastern States. A representative of the NEC would be present during the selection process.

However, following request of Tourism Department of Sikkim and Mizoram the time for filing application has been extended till May 20.
