Rs 15 cr for Majuli infrastructure devp

JORHAT, May 29 � Giving a fillip to the State tourism sector, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture, Tourism and Minister of State for Civil Aviation Dr Mahesh Sharma today said that his government will allot Rs 15 crore for infrastructure development in Majuli to promote tourism.

Dr Sharma made this announcement while participating in the inaugural day function of the North East Youth Festival at Garamur in Majuli, which will continue till Sunday.

According to him, the river island has enough potential for tourism as it is enriched with century-old heritage of Sattras and culture.

Though the Union Minister did not mention the expenditure details, officials here said that a major portion of the amount might be spent on accommodation facilities, engagement of tourist guides and transportation facilities.

He also assured of putting his official weight behind the ongoing effort to place Majuli in the World Heritage Site Map.

Participating in the programme, Union Minister for Chemical and Fertiliser Ananth Kumar said his ministry will provide all supports for early completion of the ongoing projects of gas and fertilizer production units.
