AIZAWL, Nov 27 - Aizawl district police special branch today seized 5,676 tablets of methamphetamine (Meth) worth Rs 12.03 lakh here on Saturday.

Police sources said the meth tablets were seized while the alleged drug peddler David Vanlaltluanga, 38, was trying to sell them to a buyer inside a vehicle at Chandmari locality here. The alleged drug peddler has been booked under ND&PS Act.

This is the second time that the Aizawl district special police branch seized meth tablets in Aizawl. On November 17, the police seized 5,676 tablets of methamphetamine worth Rs 6.84 lakh.

The seized meth tablets in Aizawl are reddish orange in colour and smuggled from Myanmar. Mizoram, which shares a 404-km unfenced border with Myanmar, serves as a two-way route for cross-border drug trade based in Myanmar.

Methamphetamine is a new threat to Mizoram that is already fighting a tough battle against heroin and other pharmaceutical drugs, a police official said.

He said the meth factories in Myanmar are partly fueled by pseudoephedrine smuggled out from India mainly through North East.

Meanwhile, Ramhlun South branch of Young Mizo Association on Saturday burnt down drugs and illicit liquor that it had seized during the last few months. The burnt drugs and liquor were worth over Rs 1 lakh.
