By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, June 30 The Government of India has chalked out an ambitious plan to invest one lakh crore rupees over a period of five years for improvement of road communication in the entire north-eastern region and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways started holding workshops for all the stakeholders from today.

Today the workshop was inaugurated by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in the city and the main objective is to engage all the stakeholders including the state governments, technocrats, contractors, skilled labourers etc, in the process of improvement of the road transport network in the region.

Gadkari sought the cooperation of all the state governments of the region for successful implementation of the mega plan of the Centre for improvement of the road communication network in the region, which is vital for the overall development of the region.

The function was also attended by Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Kiren Rijiju and the PWD Ministers of Assam and Tripura. Though State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was invited to attend the inaugural session of the workshop, he did not attend the same.

Talking to The Assam Tribune after the inaugural session of the two-day workshop, Sonowal said the Centre wanted active participation of the people of the North-east in its mega project for development of the road communication system. Hence, such workshops are being held so that the local contractors, technocrats and skilled workers can interact with officials of the Ministry of Road Transport on modern technology , which would be viable for the region. He pointed out that following the workshops, the local contractors would also be aware of the requirements and they would also be able to participate in the works.

Sonowal said the Government of India was interested in going hand-in-hand with all the state governments of the region as the schemes would not be successful without active cooperation of the states. The state governments would also have to provide necessary land for construction of roads and create a congenial atmosphere for implementation of the projects.

Sonowal further said that the Centre has decided to lay stress on water transport, which is the cheapest mode of transport.
