GUWAHATI, April 10 State Governor, JB Patnaik, on Friday lauded the service provided by the Sankardeva Nethralaya to the people of the region and hoped its role would expand in the times ahead. Patnaik also commended Oil India Limited for donating a sum of Rs 1 crore for the extension of the hospital.

Patnaik, who was present in the formal handing over of the cheque by OIL Chairman and Managing Director NM Borah referred to the excellent work the Nethralaya was doing in the area of eye care. He was particularly appreciative of the work done by the child care unit of the institute.

Referring to the incidence of eye diseases in India, the Governor said that millions in the country were suffering and many became blind due to lack of treatment. In such a situation, there was scope for more facilities and qualified ophthalmologists. He hoped that there would be better co-ordination among stakeholders to broaden the spectrum of services that could be made available.

An official release from OIL said that the PSU was committed to contributing in the area of health, and the financial support to Nethralaya revealed that commitment.
