WILLIAMNAGAR, Feb 19 - Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy, in his maiden visit to East Garo Hills district, reviewed the implementation of various government schemes and interacted with senior citizens at the Williamnagar Circuit House today.
In his meeting with government officials and members of the Senior Citizens� Welfare Forum, the Governor said that the future of Meghalaya lies in tourism and the potential needs to be tapped accordingly. He also stated that the Simsang river in the Garo Hills has hydro-power potential and suggested that the State should initiate steps for more power generation with the help of agencies like NEEPCO.
Presenting the district�s profile, Deputy Commissioner Swapnil Tembe highlighted the poor education and health indicators, shortage of officers and staff in government departments, poor network coverage, etc., in the district.
SP Ringrang TG Momin told the Governor that the East Garo Hills district is largely peaceful, and that the crime rate is comparatively low.
The Senior Citizens� Welfare Forum submitted a memorandum, demanding construction of an embankment along the Simsang river. Members of the forum drew the attention of the Governor towards the non-functional TB hospital, the Williamnagar Polytechnic, the incomplete Rongap bridge at Rongreng Baija, etc.
Vice Chairman of the Meghalaya State Women�s Commission, Gamchi Timre R Marak highlighted issues relating to women�s safety, working women�s hostels, etc., and stated that women�s issues are being sidelined in the district.
