Row over renovation of new Goalpara DC office building

By CORRESPONDENT

GOALPARA, July 19 - The people of Goalpara have questioned the renovation of the relatively new office building of the Deputy Commissioner that was inaugurated on February 20, 2010 by the then Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

According to official records, five DCs have served their tenure from this office building, and the reason behind this ambitious renovation initiative was not yet clear.

The renovation aims to change a portion of the building, especially the Deputy Commissioners chamber.

A rumour has been doing the rounds that the renovation is being carried out as per the principles of Vastu Shastra, the traditional science of architecture.

However, sources told this correspondent on condition of anonymity that till now, no administrative approval has been given for the work estimated to cost around Rs 15-20 lakh.

Several people questioned such renovation carried out on a comparatively new structure and the wastage of taxpayers money, especially in a relatively backward district which has numerous other problems that require immediate attention of the district administration.
