Rousing welcome for Manipur CM after lobbying against Citizenship Bill

By Newmai News

IMPHAL, Feb 14 - The Manipur Pradesh BJP today extended a rousing welcome to Chief Minister N Biren Singh who arrived here after days of camping in New Delhi with representatives of 11 political parties against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The Chief Minister-led delegation of 11 political parties comprising the Manipur Democratic Alliance (MDA) formed in the wake of the uproar against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, had camped at the national capital for several days.

When the Chief Minister and other delegates reached the Imphal airport this afternoon, State BJP workers and supporters rushed to welcome them. Ministers and MLAs of the ruling BJP were among those who welcomed the Chief Minister and other delegates of the MDA.

A procession of vehicles and motorcycles was taken out from the airport to Hatta Kangjeibung where a felicitation function was also held.

Addressing the function, the Chief Minister credited the non-passage of the Citizenship Bill in the Rajya Sabha to the people, particularly the womenfolk and civil society organisations.

Biren Singh claimed that the BJP-led coalition government worked at its best to thwart the Bill in the Rajya Sabha.

The Chief Minister also said that the State Government had openly stated its stand against the Bill to the Central Government leaders.

He further said that his Government would consult civil society organisations regarding steps to be taken to safeguard the indigenous people of the State. My Government is always ready to discus the issue with the people, he said.

MDA convener M Tombi Singh said that it was the voice of the people of the North Eastern States that prevented the passage of the Citizenship Bill in the Rajya Sabha.
