Rongker festival observed

By Correspondent

DIPHU, Jan 6 - The Karbi community across Karbi Anglong observed Rongkerthe post harvest festival on Saturday across east and west Karbi Anglong. People particularly the rural population observed the day with religious dedication and cultural fervour.

Generally the ceremony is observed at the commencement of the New Year seeking peace, prosperity and excellent yield in the village by propitiating the Gods. Kurusar (priests) perform worship and offer animal sacrifices to conciliate the Karbi deities and seek their blessings for the welfare of the village and protect it from any evil forces and natural calamities. The community believes that non-observance of the rituals will invite hardship upon the village and its inhabitants.

It is an annual religious celebration of the Karbis which is carried out by each village. Every Karbi village has a chosen place in the village for observing Rongker. Every year, villagers across Karbi Anglong form working groups among the villagers to deal with the preparation of Rongker well ahead of the commencement of the festival. Members of the Karbi community residing in other parts of Assam also observe Rongker.
