Rongali festival gets under way

GUWAHATI, Jan 29 - Rongali � Destination Culture, Harmony � started today with an attempt to make Assam an IT destination.

A seminar organised as part of Rongali at Brahmaputra Ashok was attended by a team of top officials of the Ministry of IT, Government of India, STPI, Ministry of DoNER, IT departments of the Assam Government and other NE States.

Entrepreneurs from Kolkata, Bengaluru and other places � apart from top Assamese entrepreneurs � interacted with one another. The Union Ministry of IT launched a new scheme for promotion of BPOs in Assam and the North East under which attractive capital grants would be offered to entrepreneurs investing in Assam and the North East.

Rongali aims to promote Assam as an adventure sports destination. The Aero Sports Association of Assam presented parasailing, paragliding and paramotoring with various pilots coming from across the world.

Zubeen Garg launched the first flight by flying over the Brahmaptura for half an hour. The Indian Army presented a spectacular display of various arms and equipment, while the Sports Authority of India staged various traditional sports like archery, kho-kho, wrestling, etc.

Rongali will have some extensive exhibitions of agri-horti products, handicraft products, cuisines of the North East, mask presentation by Sangeet Natak awardee Reba Mahanta, presentations by the Mising Autonomous Council, etc.

In the evening, Jyotiprasad Agarwala�s acclaimed play, Karengor Ligiri, was presented by Abhinaya. Musical performance by the team of Zubeen Garg and Garima Garg, and Mayukh Hazarika, Anaya Brahma were among the other highlights. A short mukha (mask) bhaona was also presented.

The second day will start from 10 am where plenty of aero sports, adventure sports, and traditional sports will be held. A book, Adda, with international writers will be organised at 2 am.
