Rongali festival begins with fanfare

GUWAHATI, April 3 � �Rongali -- celebrating the essence of Assam�, a festival to promote Assam as a tourist destination, started with much fanfare today at the Veterinary ground, Khanapara here. The programme started with colourful dance performances presented by Mising, Rabha, Dimasa and Karbi artistes.

The festival was formally inaugurated by Sumitra Patir, Minister of Tourism, Assam. Terming Rongali as a revolutionary step to promote tourism and bridging the gaps, she called upon the travel writers and tour operators from across the country to take part in the fest.

According to Shyamkanu Mahanta, chief organiser of Rongali, the fest would showcase way of life of various tribes and communities of the State and their colourful culture, attires, ethnic food, magic of Mayong and bhaona. He added that Rongali would showcase glorious history of Assam from Bhagadutta to Bhupen Hazarika.

In the evening, colourful musical performance by North East Breeze, Tarulota Kutum, Sajan Nayak, Khagen Gogoi and Angarag Papon Mahanta were the highlights of the evening. Tomorrow, a day-long colourful cultural programme would be held at the venue apart from magic and traditional sports of Assam.

Rongali is an initiative of Trend MMS which also organizses North East Festival, and Sankaradeva Movement with support from Hotel and Restaurant Association and Assam Tourism, said a statement.
