Rongali Bihu celebrated at Jagiroad

JAGIROAD, April 22 - The three-day Rongali Bihu Utsav organised by Sadou Jagiroad Rongali Bihu Sanmilan concluded on April 18 at the Jagiroad HS School playground with various events.

The celebrations began with the hoisting of Bihu flag by Jitendra Kr Deka, president of the Bihu Sanmilan and it was followed by swahid tarpan initiated by Rudra Kr Das, Associate Professor in Geography, Jagiroad College.

A cultural procession was brought out in the area where several ethnic groups in their traditional dresses participated. This procession was inaugurated by Dr Puni Ram Pator, retired Joint Director, Health Services, Morigaon. A total of 70 senior citizens including farmers, artistes and literateurs were felicitated by the Bihu Sanmilan. Mouchumi Tai of Duliajan, Nivedita Borah of Dibrugarh and Juri Borah of Digboi won the first, second and third prizes with cash awards respectively in the Bor-bihuwati competition while Palki Borah of Morigaon, Bismita Hazarika of Guwahati and Anjana Thakur of Bhurbandha received first, second and third prizes with cash awards respectively in the Saru-bihuwati competition organised on the occasion.

A State-level Bhupendra Sangeet competition was also organised, which was inaugurated by artiste Surjya Goswami in which Bhabana Saikia of Tezpur, Demiraj Deka of Morigaon, Kasturika Anirudha and Archana Dey of Jagiroad won the first, second, third and consolation prizes with cash awards respectively. A series of competitions on other events like quiz, painting, poetry recitation was also organised among the students including Tiwa folk dances. A Mukoli Bihu exhibition was also organised where 20 Bihu Dols from various regions of the district took part.

Dilip Sen, teacher of Jagiroad NF Railway High School, Dr Ramesh Nath, retired Associate Professor of Jagiroad College and Jagiroad MLA Piyush Hazarika inaugurated the first, second and closing cultural evenings respectively in which several local artistes and singer Subasana Dutta among others kept the audience enthralled.
