GUWAHATI, May 12 - �Community Radio (CR), Citizen Band Radio (CB) and Amateur Radio (HAM) are the communication media that reach the widest audience around the world and can also be recognised as powerful communication tools and low-cost mediums to perform self-studies, research and development works, to provide non-profit local and worldwide communication experiments with electromagnetic waves.�
This was stated by Taheruddin Ahmed, an Assam Police officer and amateur ham radio operator based in Guwahati, while taking part in a tech talk titled �Integration of Community Radio (CR), Citizen Band Radio (CB) and Amateur Radio (HAM) networks during Disaster� organised by Pune Hams on Sunday.
Such radios have a lot of potential to weave together a community into a stronghold and can give a boost to rural development. These can also be utilised as providers of supplemental communication for pre-disaster preparedness, relief, rescue, rehabilitation and mitigation to the disaster control agencies during emergency, he added.
Ahmed has used the ham radio network in the country to help people stranded in states like Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
As community radio broadcasts only the information, it is required to collect the actual information at the level of disaster-affected areas or community people. In this case HAM Radio and Citizen Band Radio are the only means for conveying the real information even in remote areas, Ahmed further said.
