Robotic surgeries performed for the first time in State

GUWAHATI, March 1 - A team of surgeons headed by Dr Subhash Khanna performed the first robotic surgery of the State in the month of February, stated a press release issued here on Sunday.

Prof Subhash Khanna, an eminent surgeon of the state and Chief Medical Director of Swagat Group of Hospitals, said that a team consisting of four surgeons and one assisting surgeon � Prof Swagata Khanna, Dr Susheel Kharbanda, Dr Dibyajyoti Gharphalia and Dr Supriya Choudhury � along with four scrub nurses underwent many rounds of orientation and virtual reality training on simulators and finally conducted surgeries on cadavers at Sharjah Medical University.

He said that there has been earlier attempts to introduce robotics by hospitals of the North East but the cost was very prohibitive. �Robot-assisted surgery that earlier sounded like science fiction has become a reality and we have already performed seven surgeries in the last one month and planning to take up many complex surgeries in near future,� he said.

This is the first ever robotic surgery unit in the North East, and aims to provide advanced surgical care to the people in this part of the country.

The official launch ceremony of the Versius Robot was held on March 1 and the Robotic Operation Theatre complex was inaugurated by Minister of State for Health Pijush Hazarika, in the presence of Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences Vice Chancellor Prof Dipika Deka. The opening ceremony also included an official walk-through experience to the media and invitees to the robotic surgery theatre where the technology was demonstrated.
