NALBARI, Nov 20 - An amount of Rs 60 lakh was looted in broad daylight on Friday by a gang of robbers at gunpoint from the Punjab National Bank, Amayapur Jagyabhumi branch in Nalbari district. A youth � identified as Nayan Das, a tempo driver from Elengidal village in Nalbari district � sustained bullet injuries on his leg when the robbers opened fire as they fled the spot. He was immediately admitted at Swahid Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital which referred him to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. His condition in now stated to be out of danger.
An eyewitness said four robbers entered the bank and directed all customers at gunpoint to sit down. The robbers then looted all the money from the cash counter. They reportedly wore helmets and black masks during the entire incident. Senior police officials of the district immediately rushed to the spot and launched an operation to trace the culprits.
Superintendent of Police Amanjit Kaur later told the media that they have interrogated the bank officials to learn about the exact amount of money looted and the sequence of events.
The SP also confirmed that the four robbers came on two motorbikes around 11.30 am. Police also found three blank cartridges from the spot. Security deployment has been beefed up after the incident.
According to sources, the branch manager had kept the money for the last three days at the branch. The bank robbery incident has created a sensation in the district.
