GUWAHATI, Oct 2 - As Guwahati city is now in the thick of the festive season, it witnessed severe traffic snarls all over the major thoroughfares today. In some places even senior traffic police officers were forced to come on the road to mitigate the menace. But in most of the cases, the traffic police machinery proved a complete failure.

The traffic snarls have been caused mainly due to installation of various decorative structures along with arches and gates for Durga Puja in various parts of the city. Unfortunately, it is come to light that many puja committees have violated norms formulated by the district administration for setting up such temporary structures.

Many puja committees have blocked some subways in the city which has also contributed to the traffic congestion.

Commenting on the issue, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) traffic Prasanta Saikia said, We have already urged all puja committees to properly follow the norms as formulated by the district administration. If we find any violation of such norms, we will have to rectify them through proper discussions. For this purpose I will ask every police station to take necessary action.

Moreover, the increasing number of e-rickshaw will be a major challenge for the traffic police during the puja days. According to DCP Saikia at present more than 6,000 e-rickshaws are on the roads of the city. To control these e-rickshaws we have taken a special plan. It will be an area-specific action, the DCP said.

The DCP also announced that during the puja days, entry of heavy, medium and mini trucks from Jalukbari, Garchuk, Lokhara, Beltola, Hatigaon and Chandmari side in the city will be strictly restricted from 1 pm to 4 am. The traffic police also plans to declare many roads in the city as one-way during the puja days.

According to the DCP, the Dr RP Road at Ganeshguri will be one-way only from Ganesh Mandir side and there will be no entry for vehicles coming from RG Baruah Road side towards Ganesh Mandir.

In Paltan Bazar area, entry of vehicles will be restricted on AK Azad Road from Nepali Mandir side towards Sarabbhati.

In Panbazar area, entry of vehicles will be restricted on MS Road from Shani Mandir side and on Dr JC Das Road the restriction will be from Khubchand point.

At Jalukbari, entry of vehicles will be restricted from Maligaon Chariali to Pandu and on PNGB Road there will be restriction between Maligaon Chariali and Kamakhya Railway Station level crossing.

In Bharalumukh area, entry of vehicles will be restricted on RK Choudhury Road and SC Road from Kumarpara Pachali and Fatasil Ambari.

In Basistha area, entry of vehicles will be restricted on Beltola Joyanagar Road from Joyanagar Chariali to Beltola Chariali and from Bhetapara Chariali towards Beltola Chariali. At Bamunimaidam, entry of vehicles will be restricted from Anuradha point to Hatigarh Chariali.

During the Puja days, there will be changes in the city bus routes as well.
