GUWAHATI, Sept 20 - Residents in several areas of the city have been complaining about the garbage being pulled out from drains and dumped on roadsides for several days, making life miserable for both residents and passersby.
Heaps of garbage can be seen on roadsides in areas like AT Road, Hatigaon, Bishnu Rabha Path, Bhetapara and several other interior parts of the city today.
�The drain was cleaned three days ago but the garbage has been left on the roadside. The garbage poses health risks as it becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This needs to be removed immediately,� Amit Biswas of AT Road said.
�It is a common scenario in Guwahati. After cleaning the drains, the waste is always left behind. The waste full of plastic items was left for several days on the roadside here,� Jiten Talukdar, a resident of Bhetapara, said.
A source in the GMC said the Corporation has given a contract to a third party for desilting of drains in the city.
�Based on requests from the residents, the Corporation used its labourers for cleaning the drains. The waste was dumped on roadsides for drying up. However, this should be removed after one day,� he added.
Adarshapur Bylane-4 Unnayan Samiti, Kahilipara general secretary Dhrubajyoti Sarma said the scenario in his area has improved only after residents started monitoring the cleaning process.
�Earlier, garbage being pulled out from the drains here was left on roadsides for three to four days. But now, the situation has improved,� he added.
