Road mishaps top list of accidental deaths

GUWAHATI, Aug 3 - Traffic accidents are the major reason for fatalities among accidental deaths in the State.

As per latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there were 7,825 traffic accident cases, including road accidents, railway crossing accidents and railway accidents in Assam in 2014.

A total of 3,212 persons died and another 6,562 persons were injured in these traffic accidents.

The NCRB data shows that during 2014, there were altogether 5,853 accidental deaths in Assam, including 291 accidental deaths due to natural causes, 4,722 due to unnatural causes (including traffic accidents) and 840 due to other causes.

Assam�s share in the total accidental deaths nationwide in 2014 was 1.3 per cent.

The number of accidental deaths in the State due to natural causes jumped by 28.8 per cent in 2014 to 291 as against 226 in 2013.

Similarly, the total number of accidental deaths due to unnatural and other causes combined also went up by 14.8 per cent in 2014 to 5,562 compared to 4,844 in 2013.

Of the victims of accidental deaths in Assam in 2014, 270 were in the age group of below 14 years, 848 were between 14 and 18 years of age, 1,875 were in the 18-30 years age group, 1,721 were of 30-45 years of age, 945 were of 45-60 years and 194 were of above 60 years of age.

Of the total deaths, 4,687 were of males and 1,166 were of females.

Among the natural causes of accidental deaths, floods took the lives of 75 persons in Assam in 2014, while 52 deaths were on account of landslide, 43 due to lightning and 121 on account of other natural causes.

In the unnatural causes� category, traffic accidents were responsible for the highest number of deaths (3,212). Among other causes were drowning (498), electrocution (73), accidental explosions (14), falls (47), accidental fire (81), factory or machine accident (eight), firearms (six) and collapse of structure (one), other causes (484) and causes not known (298).

With regard to persons who died in the State by other causes of accidents in 2014, the NCRB data states that 42 deaths happened on account of sudden deaths (which include industrial accidents and heart attack), two were deaths of women during pregnancy, 74 were killed by animals and 174 were on account of poisoning, including food poisoning, accidental intake of insecticides or pesticides, poisonous gases, snake bite, and bites of animals, reptiles or insects. Another 30 deaths happened due to suffocation, one due to drug overdose, 309 due to other causes and the causes of 208 deaths were not known.
