BONGAIGAON, Jan 6 - The Manikpur Mahkuma Joutha Samannayrakshi Dabi Samiti, a joint forum of seven organisations, observed a six-hour bandh in Manikpur area of Bongaigaon district from 6 am on Wednesday seeking the status of civil subdivision to Manikpur. The forum also staged a four-hour national highway blockade at Manikpur from 8 am today to enforce the bandh.
Police detained the picketers at Manikpur police station till the expiry of the bandh hours, said Safiar Ali, leader of the forum and the Bongaigaon district unit of the AASU.
�Because of political conspiracy, Manikpur was not declared as a civil subdivision... we would continue our agitation till our demand is met,� Ali said, adding that they have decided to meet Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on January 8 in this regard.
