RMRC celebrates 33rd foundation day

DIBRUGARH, July 17 - The Lahowal-based Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), one of the six regional centres of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which caters to health research in the north-eastern States namely, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram and Sikkim, celebrated its 33rd foundation day on July 12 and 13 at its campus.

The two-day programme started with a campus cleanliness drive under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan by the staff members. This was followed by a health check-up and awareness camp for the staff and their family members. A blood pressure and diabetes check-up camp for elderly people from the neighbouring villages of the centre was also organised. The RMRC was kept open for the occasion.

On the second day, the Director in charge of the RMRC, Dr P Dutta, in his welcome address, paid rich tributes to the founder Director, Dr BD Baruah, noted pathologist of Assam. Dr Baruah had made untiring efforts for the establishment of the centre here. Operating from a small rented house in Dibrugarh town when it was set up on July 12, 1982 , the RMRC today has its own state-of-the-art laboratory at Lahoal which serves the public by diagnosing rare diseases.

The Director in-charge felicitated the staff members of the RMRC who have already completed 25 years of service. Students who passed the recent HSLC and HS examinations and who are the wards of the staff members of the RMRC were also felicitated during the meeting held at the RMRC Auditorium by the RMRC Staff Consumers� Cooperative Society.

The 33rd foundation day oration was delivered by Dr AC Kataki, Director, Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Guwahati. Dr Kataki emphasized on the prevention and early detection of cancer. He also highlighted the different research projects going on in the BBCI in collaboration with the RMRC, Dibrugarh.

Dr Ratan Kataki, principal in-charge, Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, attended the function as the guest of honour. Dr HK Das, organising secretary, offered the vote of thanks, a release stated.
