Rly safety issues discussed

GUWAHATI, Oct 15 � The Commissioner of Railway Safety (South Eastern and Northeast Frontier Circles), Ministry of Civil Aviation, S Nayak held a coordination meeting with RS Virdi, General Manager of the Maligaon-headquartered NF Railway and his team of principal officers here today.

Various issues related to the safety of train operations were discussed in the meeting, said an official statement.

Ravinder Gupta, Chief Safety Officer of NF Railway highlighted some of the major steps taken by the zone during the recent months for enhancing safety.

He said that innovative site mock drills have been introduced for assessing the development of Accident Relief Train personnel and equipment at site. This is critical for ensuring speedy rescue and restoration work at the site of an accident.

Besides, the International Level Crossing Awareness Programme was observed all throughout NF Railway from June 2 to June 6 this year.

NF Railway has planned for elimination of all unmanned level crossings by 2016-17 by either manning these or by construction of low height sub-ways or road under bridges. At the same time, action is also being taken for preventing and/or closing unauthorized track crossings.

High capacity fire extinguishers (15 kg trolley mounted) are being provided at selected stations, the Commissioner of Railway Safety was briefed.
