Riverfront to become out of bounds for picnickers

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 18 Assam Police is likely to move the Kamrup district administration asking the latter to issue order prohibiting use of river banks located in and around the capital city as picnic spots.

Round-the-clock surveillance of the riverfronts by the joint team of River Police and the City police has also been proposed during the season.

Speaking to this reporter, a senior Assam Police official informed that the step would be proposed keeping in view rising number of untoward incidents recorded in the last couple of seasons in these spots.

He also informed that the river banks, especially during the picnic season, become vulnerable for public, which is why such a step was necessary.

He, however, conceded that the role of River Police would be the utmost in this regard.

There is a need to strengthen the River Police and steps have been proposed for the same, he added.

Senior Superintendent of Police (City) Pradeep Chandra Saloi, when contacted, said that no decision on this has been taken as yet, though the matter is being discussed with the district administration.

Not all the riverfronts are vulnerable and so the question of prohibiting public visit to all of them may not be a good idea. However, we are for prohibiting public entry to the vulnerable areas or at least take steps for constant monitoring, Saloi added.

It needs mention here that the City has witnessed a number of drowning cases in the recent past, especially in areas like Sunsali under Noonmati police station.
