GUWAHATI, July 16 - Noted Assamese litterateur Rita Choudhury has been appointed Director of the National Book Trust (NBT), India by the Union Human Resource Development Ministry, her husband, former minister Chandra Mohan Patowary told this newspaper. She is the first Assamese litterateur to be appointed as NBT Director, he claimed.
Choudhury, an associate professor of political science at the Cotton College here, has so far penned over 15 fiction and four books of poems. For her fiction Deolangkhui, she had won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2008. Deolangkhui and Makam are her popular works of fiction.
Makam is based on the harassment meted out to the Indian citizens of Chinese origin during the Indo-China conflict in 1962. She has also made a documentary � Wars and Tears � based on Makam, which she herself translated into English. Her Mayabritta and Deolangkhui have also been translated into English.
