Rise in cyber crimes

GUWAHATI, Oct 3 - At a time when most of the States in the North East have reported a fall in the number of cases under various cyber crimes, Assam has registered a rise on this front.

As per latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 483 cyber crime cases were reported during 2015 in Assam, which is an increase of over 27 per cent compared to the previous year. In 2014, there were 379 such cases in the State.

At the national level, Assam�s share of cases reported under cyber crimes during 2015 was 4.2 per cent of the total 11,592 such cases across India.

Altogether, 457 persons were arrested under various cyber crimes in Assam last year, against 351 arrests in 2014, which is an increase of 30.2 per cent year-on-year.

It is noteworthy that Assam and Tripura are the only two States in the North East which witnessed a surge in cases under cyber crimes.

Tripura witnessed a jump of 160 per cent in cyber crime cases with 13 such incidents in 2015 as against five in 2014.

All other States reported an annual decline in cyber crime cases in 2015. Nagaland did not report any such case in either 2014 or 2015.

In Arunachal Pradesh, there were six such cases in 2015 compared to 18 in 2014, a fall of over 66 per cent.

Cases reported under cyber crimes fell by 53.8 per cent in Manipur, from 13 to six, during the period under review.

In Meghalaya, there were 56 such cases in 2015 compared to 60 in 2014, registering an annual decline of 6.7 per cent.

Mizoram reported eight such cases in 2015 as against 22 in 2014, a fall of 63.6 per cent year-on-year.

At the national level, a total of 11,592 cases of cyber crimes were reported in 2015 compared to 9,622 in 2014, which is a jump of over 20 per cent, NCRB data said.

Of all the 483 cases reported in Assam during 2015, 34 had personal revenge or settling of scores as the motive, 31 were on account of emotional motives like anger or revenge, 18 were due to greed or for financial gain, 18 were attributed to extortion, two were pranks, 155 were on account of fraud or illegal gain, 66 were reported as insult to modesty of women, 61 were committed with the motive of sexual exploitation, 16 for blackmailing and 82 for other reasons.

Of the 457 persons arrested or accused of cyber crime during 2015 in Assam, six were employees or disgruntled employees of their intended victims, 24 were business competitors, 173 were neighbours or friends or relatives, 78 were sexual freaks, 48 were students, nine were �cyber terrorists�, 17 were professional computer geeks or hackers and 102 had other profiles.
