Rio vows to launch campaign for green Nagaland

By Correspondent

DIMAPUR, June 5 - Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today promised to launch a campaign for a clean and green Nagaland within three months.

Addressing a programme organised at the Nagaland Baptist Church Council convention centre in Kohima on the World Environment Day, Rio said the occasion reinforces our commitment to protect the environment for a better future for all of us. He maintained that the World Environment Day is the peoples day for doing something locally, nationally or globally for Mother Earth.

Asserting that the Government is committed to planting more trees for a green Nagaland, the Chief Minister called upon the youths and other people of the State to join the afforestation drive. A clean and green Nagaland would become a reality only with the active participation of all people, Rio stated.

On this years theme of the World Environment Day, Beat Plastic Pollution, the Chief Minister said plastic pollution poses the greatest environmental challenge. We have to consider what changes we can make in our everyday lives to reduce the burden of plastic pollution on biodiversity and health, he said.

Rio also pointed out that plastic has become a menace in Nagaland too, especially Kohima, Dimapur and other district headquarters, leading to choking of drains and gutters.

The Chief Minister further called upon everyone to commit to a plastic-free Nagaland by banning the use of plastic products in the State within six months. Together we can make a difference by reducing the use of plastics and contribute to protecting the environment, Rio said.
