IMPHAL, Oct 6 � Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju has called upon the BJP workers in Manipur to work hard to win the Hiyanglam Assembly seat in Thoubal district in the coming by-election to make a new beginning for the party. BJP has no MLA in the 60 member State Assembly.
Rijiju, BJP MP from Arunachal (West) parliamentary constituency, airdashed here to join the election campaign for party candidate Maibam Dhanabir. He addressed the party workers at the Keishampat party office before returning to the National capital this afternoon.
�The party need to be strengthened in the State,� said Rijiju adding, �I hope our party candidate will win the by-election.
BJP Manipur Pradesh president Th Chaoba, former State president and ex-MLA Meinam Bhorot, former president Sh Shantikumar, former Speaker Dr Sapam Dhananjoy Singh and other party leaders attended the meeting at the party office here.
Earlier, the Union Minister, considered the face of BJP in the North East, addressed an election rally at Sekmaijin area of the Hiyanglam constituency in Thoubal district. He said that he was impressed by the high turnout of around 3,000 people at the rally.
Altogether, five candidates including BJP candidate M Dhanabir, former MLA E Dwijamani (Cong), Dr Y Radheshyam (Trinamool congress), M Amutombi (Manipur People�s Party) and Th Laiba (Manipur State Congress Party) are in the fray to the by-election scheduled to be held on October 17.
The by-election was necessitated after the untimely expiry of the sitting MLA Maibam Kunjo of Trinamool Congress in September this year.
